Fitting Rear Axle Spacers (Rear Track Spacers)

The Ford Ka Rally Championship competitors are fitted with a Wide Arch Kit. The rear track is also increased by 20mm per side. A few klub members have bought a version of rear track spacers from Ian Willacy. Here's a quick guide to fitting them.

A few things to point out first of all are the differences between the collection and non collection hub mounts. The non collection has a wider track as standard due to the addition of small spacers between the hub mount and brake back plate. If you are fitting the track spacers to a collection model you may need to cut down the bolts to compensate for the lack of additional spacer.

Fitting these will make the wheel sit closer to the rear arches. This may result in scrubbing if lowered or if the car is fitted with wheels which are not correct Ford Offset

1. First start by loosening the rear wheel bolts and jacking the car up. Support each side of the car with axle stands. Make sure the handbrake is off.

2. Working underneath the car, remove the 4 bolts behind the shock absorber.

3. If the car is a collection model you will now need to remove the drum.

This can be tricky and will require some pushing forwards and backwards for the drum to clear the shoes.

You should now have removed the drum and stub axle. (If the unit can be moved away after the 4 bolts are removed from the beam proceed to step 6.)
4. With the drum off you should now be able to locate the two rivets holding the backplate to the beam. Drill these out and remove any excess rivet.
5. With the backplate now free of the beam position your spacer between the back plate and beam
6. Place the drum back onto the backplate. Line up the holes for the stub axle, backplate, spacer and mounting point, this can be tricky.

Using the new longer bolts, try and get two of them in and tighten finger tight You should now be able to get the last two in and tighten them with a torque wrench to 49 lbf/ft.

Check that the drum can rotate freely and that the handbrake can be applied and removed as normal.

7. Refit the wheel and do repeat 2-6 on the opposite side.
When finished lower the car to the ground and tighten the wheel bolts to 63 lbf/ft
